Announcing a preliminary iPhone 1.1.1 Jailbreak

The iPhone/iTouch Dev guys have been hard at work for weeks and have finally managed to jailbreak 1.1.1. Right now, they're nowhere near releasing a general-use tool but the first steps have been made. Congratulations to dinopio, asap18, netkas, Martyn, mjc, Niacin, BloomFilter, pytey, tE_gU, pumpkin, roxfan, sam, SmileyDude, NerveGas, Nate True, Arminius, DirectriX, Edgan, ixtli, kroo, xorl, and the rest of the team.

So what does this jailbreak mean?

  • Third Party apps run. Kind of. We probably have to recompile many of them for the new frameworks because many of them crash.
  • Springboard no longer recognizes DisplayOrder.plist. And the list of "whitelisted" apps (that is, the official Applications including Safari, Photos, Calendar, etc) seems to be hard-coded into Springboard.app
  • The iPhone has been activated via third-party workarounds.
  • The 1.1.1 binaries barely work with 1.0.2 -- at least not well enough to run the music store without major hacking.
  • The Mobile Terminal App works on 1.1.1.
  • The entire bsd suite still works -- as do standard command-line utilities compiled for ARM.
  • 1.1.1 references both com.apple.mobile.radio and com.apple.mobile.nike.
  • The jailbreak method is nowhere near ready for prime time. So please be patient.

Rob/#62: "Other than your security arguments, the rest is you circle jerking your ego. ...and by the way, I'm an industry veteran and no "kid". I did the same customizing of my Palm Treo, but didn't depend on hacks because Palm "had a clue"."

I beg to differ, on all your assertions...

I have two points of view on this issue 1) What a bunch of losers. Don't you guys have lifes? Here's a thought for you, if a product doesn't do what you want it to do don't buy it. 2) I laugh my ass off watching you guys work so hard and then complain when Apple rolls right over you with another update, all the while you keep Apple in the media spotlight pushing the value of the stock higher.

Congrats. I am using my Iphone with Vodafone here in Germany and with 1.0.2
it works better than every mobile/pda before.
As long it will take I can wait. What do I need an update for
if I have absolute no problem with the current version?
The harder Apple will try to secure the simlock the harder it will be
tried to break it.

Great work - keep it up regardless of how many roadblocks Apple puts up.

In my opinion this is not about beating Apple but about the fight. Apple is trying to leverage it's brand for short-term gains; forgetting the long term effects.

They are desperately holding on to an old-world business model - one where they think nirvana is being the sole supplier to a customer: pc, software, music, phone, etc - is still valid. Sorry, the world has moved on.

In Europe (not only France) consumers are even protected from coupling by law. To ensure full competition you may not bundle products and services. If your in doubt ask Microsoft about their experiences in E.

Keep up the fight - eventually we will have freedom and choice.
